Title: A look at short skirts/shorts in contemporary fashion

shorts

I have noticed with great amazement how short skirts and shorts have become trendy in Ghana and other parts of the world. Research from Wikipedia shows that short skirts became popular in "Swinging London" of the 1960s, but its popularity has waned and resurged since. Before that time, short skirts/shorts  were only seen in sport clothing. I see almost about ten to twenty ladies either in short shorts or short skirts in a day. Gone are those days when our religious beliefs forbade us from wearing things that expose certain parts of our body: breasts and thighs. The only place where you can see shorts and short skirts and it is acceptable is either at the beach or the sports field.  Eventhough I don’t fancy short shorts and skirts, I admire some ladies in shorts skirts/shorts. What is more exciting is that some ladies use African prints to sew the short skirts/shorts. Another school  of thought, thinks when some ladies wear short skirt/shorts, it’s just a complete no!! Because of their physique.

I learned recently from Globalvoicesonline.org that in Cambodia: a country in Southeast Asia, about 100 people including teachers and students held a rally on March 28 2010, in an effort to stop female students from wearing short skirts. This will help preserve Khmer Culture and discourage female students from vigorously adapting western culture. My view on this issue is that societal norms and mores were created by our ancestors especially during the "hunters and gathers" era. lol. I know there are some advantages but where and when necessary, we can create a new one ( like accepting wearing short skirts as a norm). What is your view?

People who wear short skirts/shorts are regarded as confident and they also have great body figure. Someone put it right "short skirts/shorts are not for the faint of heart, nor those who aren't confident about their figure". I partly agree with her because when you wear it, are you ready to face the anti-fashion people or even your friends/parents/peers?

My question is do Africans think that wearing these things means they are adapting western culture and should short skirts/shorts be worn to all places?

Who determines whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. I think the one who wears it should determine that.

This article is nice and I believe the African continent is now coming to terms with mini-skirts and shorts.
