Most successful entrepreneurs in the fashion industry – Oumou Sy, Senegal's queen of couture., Ozward Boateng, Smanta Angels, just to mention a few followed their passion. Hmm, I know not all people who followed their passion will be successful but statistics show that more people have been successful by following their passions. The story is no different for Aisha Obuobi.
Aisha completed university of Ghana in 2008 with BA in Psychology (She did not study fashion design). She founded christiebrown in March 2008 and a lunched her designs on 4th March 2008 at Accra Polo Club in Ghana. Christie Brown’s aim is to satisfy the urge “of that modern woman who seeks a true taste of Africa”. Christie Brown is her grandmother’s name. Aisha grew up watching her paternal grandmother sew clothes.
One thing that is amazing about Aisha is that she is a self thought designer. Barely two years into the fashion industry, she has won several awards including: The Emerging Designer of the Year Award for the year 2009 at the inaugural Arise Africa Fashion Week in Johannesburg, South Africa, She was the only Ghanaian designer chosen to showcase in the Arise L’Afrique- a- Porter, in Paris as part of Paris Fashion Week in March this year. At the just ended Africa Economic Forum hosted by Columbia University, Aisha Obuobi was invited to sit on the panel for “African Fashion Going Global”; a discourse on making African Fashion a recognizable global industry. She has also been featured in magazines such as Canoe 53 Sails (Ghana), Black Hair (UK) and Destiny (South Africa) and Sawubona (In flight magazine for SAA). Aisha Obuobi, was listed as one of the women set to make headlines in 2010 in a feature published in the international edition of Glamour magazine. Aisha’s success strikes and inspires me. It means if you are passionate about what you do, you will make a mark.
These are some of her collections. Judge them yourself
These collections are fresh and commercial. The colour combination of the Dutch wax she used was great in terms of colour and design combination. Aisha has since become a hot cake in the fashion industry. She will once again be participating in the Arise Africa Fashion Week from June 30th to 3rd July 2010 in South Africa. I wish her all the best in her career. I trust she will make the fashion week a memorable one and win for herself more awards :-)
Lessons Learned:
Aisha created employment for herself because she knew what she wanted. I wonder how her life would be if she had not followed her passion. Would I even know she existed in this world? May be the answer is no! I wonder where she got her seed capital to start her business. Having access to capital is a major problems for most would be entrepreneurs in Africa but She over turned it in one way or the other. What excuse would she have given if she had not ventured into fashion? I feel we the youth can learn from her. If you love something, invest ample time in it and I bet you will make it happen big.
